Here's a blog from Glove. Enjoy.
It's no secret the Bruins are in need of some help on the blue line. The moves made by rookie GM Don Sweeney this summer in keeping Adam McQuaid and acquring Matt Irwin have certainly bolstered their bottom pairing. However, with the exit of Johnny Boychuk last year and Dougie Hamilton this summer, the Bruins are still in need of a top 4 D-man. Hopefully somewhere in Alberta, Canada Peter Chiarelli has just stepped on a lego barefoot.
God I miss you so much it hurts
With 4.7 + million left to play with against the cap the Bruins have some options they can explore to address the open spot before the start of training camp.
#1 Sign Cody Franson.
He's still out there. I find this to be surprising actually. But with Erhoff getting signed by the Kings for 1 year/1.5M I feel it wont be long before Franson signs with a club. The issue with Franson though is he wants a longer term deal and has grown tired of 1 year deals contracts. Which is something Sweeney seemed to be hoping for. To bad for Trader Donny, Franson explained his position here on back on July 21. I still feel this is the best, simplest and most realistic solution for the B's. He has played top 4 minutes before and could fit very well into that, 6 foot 5, ginger colored, giant hole left in the hearts Bruins fans. If they can get a deal in place, I would see nothing wrong with Franson in the 2.5 mil range for the next 2 years if that would make him happy. Feel free to correct me if his camp has released a potential number.
#2 Trade for Luke Schenn
Saw this mentioned by the boys from Days of Y'Orr and they make a compelling argument for Schenn. Personally, it's my least favorite. I have never really felt either Schenn brother has lived up to their hype. You can look at his and Franson's HERO chart (links below) and their fancy stats are very similar though. One advantage for Schenn; He is entering the final year of his contract and with Philly who is very tight up against the cap. This is of course if Schenn's expiring contract is indeed considered by Ron Hextall and the Flyers to be movable. I still like the potential of signing Franson better as you do not give up any picks or prospects. Especially for a guy who very similar. Conversely, signing Franson means you will have him for somewhere between 2-3 seasons vs Schenn would only be 15-16. So if he sucks and I believe he would...Buh-bye.

#3 The Longshot: Ryan Ellis
So Hockeybuzz has started a neato roomer that the Broons are talking with the NashvilleCosbys Predators. This has sent the Twitter sphere, the resulting thread on HB and other outlets a abuzz(yuck, sorry) about the Bruins potentially acquiring Seth Jones. That's just simply not going to happen.
No Ron. I said it's not going to happen you asshat. Settle down.
The more realistic possibility is Ryan Ellis. The Preds need scoring and the Bruins need defense. However, the Bruins don't really have a ton of scoring themselves. So already I think this one is a bit of a long shot but follow me for second on this. Why? Because it's summer, my job sucks, and I'm fucking bored. Ellis was a former high first round pick and was projected to be a top 4 D man when he grows up. Well that time has come and yet he is still not really carving his projected niche. This could be because he was and still is in the shadow of teammates Weber, Josi and Jones. Couple that with spending most of his career being unable to crack that roster as he had both Barry Trotz and former Preds like Ryan Suter and Francis Boullion standing in his way too. Simply put, this kid may have been overdeveloped and has spent too much time in the system rather than up with big club. But it still could be a risk for the B's if he flat-lines and never really blossoms into what he should. However the numbers seem to trend in the right direction after last season:
Ellis
He shows a lot of promise and he's young. Something the Bruins may want to consider especially since the other than Zboril, Carlo, and I guess Morrow the future defense for the Bruins looks about as awesome as Fogle's chances of avoiding unwelcome prison sex.
So what would it take to strike a deal for Ryan Ellis? Again, scoring. That's read NHL LEVEL SCORING. So throw your fucking Kochlachev theories in the garbage. What it means is you're most likely going to have to part with Eriksson and a 2nd or maybe even Eriksson and a 1st. With so many variables up front this year I'm not sure I would do that until I know what you have in Pastrnak(he could slide), Connolly, Spooner(could also slide) and Hayes.
I think signing Franson is the way to go. You already have a pretty good idea of what he can bring to the table at this point. Thanks for reading. Now what say you?
