Let's take a look at the Oilers players through 12 games shall we? Full disclosure, I haven't been able to watch all of the games and most of these will be filled out using confirmation bias. I am also pretty lazy so I may make mistakes and I am not proofreading this bitch.
Forwards
Taylor Hall
GP:12 | G: 5 | A: 8 | P: 13 | +/- 5 | PIMS: 8
Taylor Hall is Taylor Hall, he is a mistake prone, point scoring bat out of Hell. He's one of the fastest players in the league and he plays with a reckless abandon that both helps and hurts him. He is Edmonton's leading scorer and he drives the bus as Edmonton's emotional leader. If he keeps this up he'll finish top 10 in scoring yet again and still be a bust.
Connor McDavid
GP:12 | G: 5 | A: 7 | P: 12 | +/- -3 | PIMS: 6
Jesus is there anything this kid cannot do? Yes, win a damn faceoff! He's blown expectations out of the water, he's fast, he scores, he passes and he ain't too bad defensively for an 18 year old kid. His stick work is impressive and his ability to steal the puck from players is embarrassing for the other players. He gets better every game and I love him to death.
Nail Yakupov
GP:12 | G: 2 | A: 8 | P: 10 | +/- 2 | PIMS: 6
Mr. Yakupov is finally breaking out, he looks right at home with McDavid and he's getting rewarded with points for his hard work. It looks like all that defense Eakins drilled into him is paying off as he regularly is the first guy back and doesn't look lost in his own end. I hope he keeps it up for the entire season and silences the haters.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
GP:12 | G: 3 | A: 6 | P: 9 | +/- 0 | PIMS: 2
The forgotten man, he's hiding in the shadow of McDavid and some fans even think that makes it ok to trade for defence, those fans are dumb if you ask me but whatever. He's a complete player that brings it all game, he's a good compliment to the high event hockey the Hall plays.
Beniot Pouliot
GP:12 | G: 3 | A: 4 | P: 7 | +/- 0 | PIMS: 10
If he could stop taking really stupid penalties at really stupid times he would be a much better player. As it stands now he's the Oilers most physical top 6 player and he does not look out of place with Yak and McDavid, he brings an intensity and is not afraid to go to the dirty areas and get the puck or cause mayhem.
Leon Draisaitl
GP:2 | G: 2 | A: 5 | P: 7 | +/- 3 | PIMS: 0
After a recent call up he has been nothing short of amazing, he's lighting up the score sheet at a phenomenal pace. How long can it last? I'm not sure but I don't think we will see Draisaitl finish the year as an over a point per game player, I'll take it while it lasts though.
Teddy Purcell
GP:12 | G: 2 | A: 2 | P: 4 | +/- -8 | PIMS: 2
Apparently Teddy is the Devil and Oilers fans want him dead. Personally I don't know what they expect from him but he's a low event hockey player who is surprisingly good defensively. He pots the occasional point and can step up and play with skilled players when he needs to. Not a good player but I don't think he's a bad player either, he is average.
Lauri Korpikoski
GP:10 | G: 2 | A: 1 | P: 3 | +/- -4 | PIMS: 6
The Korporal has impressed me this year, I had low expectations for him this year but he's a fast skater with a hard nosed mentality. He's certainly not the most gifted player but he tries to always be in the mix and is a wildcard when he's placed in a top 6 role. Currently injured the Oilers could use him back to improve their fore checking.
Mark Letestu
GP:12 | G: 1 | A: 2 | P: 3 | +/- -5 | PIMS: 0
Every time I see Letestu on the ice I miss Boyd Gordon, not that Mark has been bad but he's not a warrior the same way Gordon was. He's a smart player and good on the draw but his skill holds him back. He's had a few golden chances given to him by McDavid and he fails to capitalize due to lack of talent. Good player to have on the 4th line but he gets saddled with some hack players and that doesn't help him.
Anton Slepyshev
GP: 10 | G: 0 | A: 1 | P: 2 | +/- -4 | PIMS: 2
Gone is the productive Slepyshev from training camp that was looking like he could hold down a top 6 spot for Eberle. Instead we are left with what looks like an NHL player but maybe just a high energy bottom 6 guy. I'd vote to send him to the AHL and work on his confidence and scoring but he's not out of place on the 4th line.
Matt Hendricks
GP: 5 | G: 0 | A: 1 | P: 1 | +/- 3 | PIMS: 6
This guy is a fucking warrior, check out this ankle injury.
He brings it every shift and does all the stuff the stars don't want to. He's mean and physical and will eat opponents if given the opportunity. Unfortunately he cannot score unless he's on a breakaway or penalty shot and that really limits his role.
Rob Klinkhammer
GP: 7 | G: 1 | A: 0 | P: 1 | +/- -3 | PIMS: 2
OEL name, not so OEL player. He tries hard and he can skate fast but he really doesn't get much done when he's on the ice. Decent 4th line option who can bang bodies but doesn't score much.
Iiro Pakarinen
GP: 4 | G: 1 | A: 0 | P: 1 | +/- -3 | PIMS: 0
A decent depth option that brings a nice mix of skills, he can skate, hit and his shot is good enough to get him some respectable goal totals. Whether or not he stays up is on the coaches but I'd prefer him over Luke Gazidc
Luke Gazdic
GP: 8 | G: 0 | A: 0 | P: 0 | +/- -3 | PIMS: 10
Nicest guy ever, OEL beard but he cannot play hockey. He is a terrifying individual but that is not enough to be in the NHL anymore. He might as well just be an amusement brought out during intermission where he fights the other teams scary guy.
Anton Lander
GP: 10 | G: 0 | A: 1 | P: 1 | +/- -5 | PIMS: 0
Does anybody remember that solid two-way centre who could score last season? Anton Lander I think his name was, where did that guy go? All we have is sometimes defensively responsible Lander who doesn't know how to produce offensively. Hopefully he can turn the corner soon enough.
Defence
Oscar Klefbom
GP:12 | G: 1 | A: 4 | P: 5 | +/- -5 | PIMS: 0
Oscar is a good player but he's not a top pairing defenceman like he's being asked to be right now. He does a lot of things right but he gets overwhelmed some nights and it leads to bad things, hopefully he doesn't lose confidence and Chiarelli can bring someone in who can take the heat off of him.
Andrej Sekera
GP:12 | G: 0 | A: 4 | P: 4 | +/- -1 | PIMS: 2
Andrej has been a let down after signing a huge contract with the Oilers this past Summer. He's had some good nights but he has had his share of bad nights too and as a veteran that just isn't acceptable. He also hasn't had the best showing from his partners which is something to consider but he needs to improve vastly if the Oilers want to have a good season.
Brandon Davidson
GP: 5 | G: 2 | A: 0 | P: 2 | +/- -1 | PIMS: 2
He's had some tire fire games but he is young and learning, recently he has turned it around and even managed a goal scoring streak. His shot is surprising but he doesn't find himself in the position to use it enough, hopefully he can work on adding that to his game. He is a decent skater and plenty strong but he needs to improve his decision making on the ice. Very easy to root for and I hope he makes it in the NHL.
Darnell Nurse
GP: 3 | G: 1 | A: 1 | P: 2 | +/- 1 | PIMS: 0
Nurse is a good player already but he has a lot of questionable choices on the ice that leads me to believe he might gent sent down again. He can really do everything you would expect out of a top pairing defenceman but it's his penchant for doing it all at once that gets him in trouble. Once he settles down and starts making the easy play he'll be a OEL defenceman for the Oilers.
Mark Fayne
GP: 11 | G: 0 | A: 1 | P: 1 | +/- -3 | PIMS: 2
It's pretty telling when a veteran NHL coach healthy scratches a veteran NHL player, Fayne is usually a rock defensively but he's had some tough outings this year and the coach hopes the press box visit will get him back to where he needs to be. Fayne playing good is a must if Sekera and him are to be used as tough assignment shut down players and I have no doubt he'll get it done.
Eric Gryba
GP: 12 | G: 0 | A: 1 | P: 1 | +/- -1 | PIMS: 17
Why everyone sucks this guys dick I'll never know. He's an alright bottom pairing defender who is prone to mistakes and doesn't really bring much besides a beard and a willingness to hurt people. He's very physical and not afraid to mix it up but he can't move the puck and he's offensively retannered. Decent bottom pairing guy but don't expect too much from him going forward.
Justin Schultz
GP: 9 | G: 0 | A: 1 | P: 1 | +/- 3 | PIMS: 2
Not quite the start of the year Justin wanted to have, he's not producing offensively and has a undisclosed back injury. He has shown moments where he looks like an improved defenceman and commits to making plays but the old confused Schultz still shows up in games. Hopefully when he recovers he can continue to make strides to becoming an actual defenceman.
Griffin Reinhart
GP: 4 | G: 0 | A: 0 | P: 0 | +/- 1 | PIMS: 6
Reinhart is incredibly strong, he can rag doll pretty much anybody in front of the net. The only problem is that the other team is mobile and that frustrates Reinhart as he is not. He can skate North/South quickly but he can't handle turns and changes in speed. I'd vote to send him to the AHL and let him play some big minutes down there.
Andrew Ference
GP: 5 | G: 0 | A: 0 | P: 0 | +/- -2 | PIMS: 6
Love the person, hate the player. He just doesn't have it anymore, his body has failed him and he's too small to make up for his diminished speed. He needs to retire asap.
Goalies
Cam Talbot
GS: 9 | W: 3 | L: 6 | GAA: 2.88 | SV%: .897 | SO: 0
He has kept the Oilers in plenty of games but his numbers speak for themselves, he needs to play better. He has a few stinkers on the year but he also has some spectacular saves to go on his highlight reel. At the end of the day these are not starting goalie numbers and if he can't improve them the Oilers need to find another guy.
Anders Nilsson
GS: 3 | W: 1 | L: 2 | GAA: 3.92 | SV%: .902 | SO: 0
Small sample size and the one game he got lit up was not his fault but again these numbers are not good and he needs to play at a higher level in the future if he wants to keep his job. The good news for him is that Scrivens is embarassing himself in the AHL and he doesn't haven't to look over his shoulder yet.
