I think the 1st overall pick would net a better player than Vatenan withouth including Yak and Teddy but that's just me. Exactly my point. You could dump a contract AND pick up a solid D man. I think it's possible.

I think if you shifted the picks around, and were sending a defenseman of note back the other way (the irony in trading Jultz back there would be funny), something like this could work. Chiarelli can really use that pick to his advantage. If I were him and my intention was to bring in a top D man and shed a bad contract, that pick allows me to do both in my opinion. Give them Nikitin and perhaps take a little less back in the minor players, that is a huge win for the Oilers. Something like this maybe: ANA 2016 1st, Sami Vatenan, Jakub Silferberg, Nate Thompson for EDM 2016 1st, Nail Yakupov, Teddy Purcell and Nikita Nikitin. Maybe? I doubt they would take Nikitin. Maybe Musil instead? I like your expansion on my idea. Maybe. If that pick is first overall I believe you could dump nikitin maybe with a slight retention and get a really good D man. Chiarelli has his moments. I hope he has one with that pick

I think it's possible. Purcell and Nikitin both expire this year and Yak only makes 2.5. The only real shitty contracts that would need to move would be Korpikoski [2.5 for another year], Letestu [1.8 for two years] or Fayne [3.6 for two years] and I'd honestly rather have Fayne on the team.

Ahhh good call. I thought Nikitin had another year after this one. Nevermind then, just wait for the shit contracts to expire unless someone really wants them. That first rounder will land the Oilhorse something really good. I hope Chiarelli is able to swing something that will get this franchise into the playoffs next year. What is your impression of Talbot? Is he good enough to be "the goalie of the future"

I think Talbot is an ok starter but he's a placeholder until the Oilers find themselves a true starter. I hope Chiarelli turns that pick into someone useful instead of drafting another kid.

I don't think Letestu is all that shitty, his contract is definitely movable, I think he just gets too much ice time, I like his work effort, but it's not as good as Hendricks. I think we should buy out Korpikoski.

Lots of messages about people thinking its a bad idea. I think he'll be a perfect 5/6 Dman for us, who was our last guy that played as tough as him?

He's a 6/7 defenceman and the Oilers have never had a problem finding them. As for toughness I think Reinhart can bring that and as far as Gryba being a righty it makes no difference. At best he can ring the puck off the glass and I think Reinhart could do that on his backhand no problem.

Unless we are winning the trade, I don't see him being sent away.

Physicality boners are how you end up with McQuaid for 4 years at 2.75 or Deryk Engellen at 2.9 for 3 years.

He's 28 so he only has, say, 4-6 years left. So it's not like he'd be a bad contract to trade off in his third year, maybe his second if needed. I think his vet presence on the back end is OEL for our younger guys. I was a fan of him in Ottawa as well but I know what his skills on the ice are so I'm still a fan of him but I have double bias on the contract

Gotta make room for guys on the farm as well. Musil could make the jump much like Davidson did this year. I'd take him back on a one year deal but I'd be wary of anything more.

My plan: - Trade Purcell to highest bidder, recall Khaira
- Trade Schultz to highest bidder, recall Oesterle to see if he's worth resigning
- Try to trade Gryba + Nikitin if possible and recall Musil to see where he's at.
- Try to move Korpikoski, Gazdic + Klinkhammer if at all possible and push the forwards up the depth chart as needed.
- See if a cap strapped team will panic and try to part with a bad contract and a decent piece.
- Wait for the week of the draft and make one or two big moves.
