I played baseball and hockey growing up. It was tough in northern NJ then, there weren't many rec leagues to play hockey in, my high school didn't have hockey until the year after I graduated, and I was certainly a better pitcher than right wing. But as far as watching, hockey was always so much more fun. I think it has to do with parents too. My mom had no problem with me playing Pop Warner football when I was real young, but she hated hockey and was always afraid I'd get hurt. Probably didn't help matters when I lost my front teeth playing roller hockey with friends. I honestly think most American parents still view hockey as 70's era Flyers savagery and that may hurt its popularity in America. wow, our stories are pretty similar, except my mom didn't care what sports i played. i think hockey isn't as popular due to the cost it takes to play, even in this day and age, compared with how cheap it is to play baseball, soccer, football and basketball The cost thing is true too, and equipment has only gotten more and more expensive over the years. |

Football isn't so popular in Canada because of how expensive it is to organize. |
